This is what I got done this morning before 8 am today.  The rest of the day is going to be a piece of cake.

5:20 am - Out of bed without hitting snooze

6:00-7:00 - Completed legendary CrossFit workout “Murph”.  See below to what Murph is.

7:00-8:00 - Conference call with people on the other side of the planet.

7:25-8:00 - Took the boys to daycare.

What did you get accomplished before 8 am today?

What is the CrossFit “Murph” workout? - From CrossFit.com –

“For time:
1 mile Run
100 Pull-ups
200 Push-ups
300 Squats
1 mile Run

In memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, 29, of Patchogue, N.Y., who was killed in Afghanistan June 28th, 2005.

This workout was one of Mike’s favorites and he’d named it “Body Armor”. From here on it will be referred to as “Murph” in honor of the focused warrior and great American who wanted nothing more in life than to serve this great country and the beautiful people who make it what it is.

Partition the pull-ups, push-ups, and squats as needed. Start and finish with a mile run. If you’ve got a twenty pound vest or body armor, wear it.”

I had to sub 2000 meter row for the 1 mile run because it was too cold/dark to do it this morning.  The pushups were also done in 1 - 200 block because it’s day 1 of the push-up challenge.  The squats and pullups were broken up in chunks.  Completed in 59 minutes flat.  I’ll take it!

Last Tuesday, we had a scare with Claire’s pregnancy where we thought we lost the baby.  Thankfully, everything is OK.  We found out that Claire has something called placenta previa.  Because it is still early in her pregnancy, the doctors are hopeful it will take care of itself as the pregnancy goes on.  The pregnancy and deliveries of our 2 sons were relatively smooth and problem free. This past week, we were introduced to the reality of the challenges and difficulties of pregnancies.

The frequency (or lack there of) of updates to this blog is another reality.  It always good to have goals at the start of the new year.  The goal of keeping the blog updated every other day was a little ambitious.  The reality of everyday life with 2 kids and 1 on the way is probably going to curb the posts to Toon-Time down to 1 or 2 a week.

As I write this post, I’m watching the inauguration of Barack Obama.  I hope that he can bring change and get this country back on track.  However, I can’t even begin to imagine the reality that is going to hit him tomorrow.

This past weekend I attended a nutrition talk called ‘Cut The Crap’ given by Eva Claire “EC” Synkowski from CrossFit Boston. It was very eye opening, made me re-think everything I thought I knew about the nutrition and the human body, and gave me some good direction for my commitment to change my eating habits.

So with my new knowledge in hand, I went grocery shopping this morning.  Ugh.  It took FOREVER.  I think I spent a good 10 mins just looking at labels trying to find some sort of dressing to put on a spinach salad.  I think I’ve started down the path of being one of ‘those’ people who obsessivly look at ingredients and nutrition labels.  I’m not saying that’s a bad thing.  I’m just saying I never thought I would be one of ‘those’ people.

Brendan in Bath
This is a conversation that Claire told me took place last night during bath time.  It was between her and my 2.75 yr old.  My wife had her jeans unbuttoned because she is in that stage of her pregnancy where she’s not quite ready for maternity clothes.

Brendan (points to Claire’s unbuttoned jeans):  Mommy.  What’s that?

Claire: That’s my belly where the baby is growing.

Brendan: Where is your penis?

Claire: I’m a girl and girls do not have a penis.

Brendan:  Boys have a penis.

Claire:  That’s right.  Boys have a penis.

Brendan:  And Daddies too?

Claire (trying not to laugh): Yes, and Daddies too.

Now that Brendan is old enough to communcate and express how he is feeling, it has been so fun to see the World through a child’s eye.  Everything is so simple. If our third child is a girl, I better be ready to explain to Brendan.

Ok. 2009 is going to start next week after the “Cut the Crap” Nutrition Talk with the infamous E.C. of CrossFit Boston.  This week I am doing what I am calling the Paleo Warm Up.  This is where you get rid of all the stuff your not going to be able to eat once you start.  The catch is you get rid of it by eating all of it.  This should server 2 purposes….

1 - Get most of the stuff that will make me fall off the wagon once I start out of the house.

2- Make me so sick of sugar, carbs, processed food that I won’t want to eat them when I start.

So, I’m off to finish off the chocolate from my Christmas stocking, then some bread with butter, and a BIG glass of super sweet Tang.  Wish me luck.

Well. It didn’t take long to break one of my goals for the New Year. I was starting to do my Paleo diet but didn’t make it past the Pot Luck at my Cousin’s today. So, TOMORROW is when my New Year really starts.  Part of the problem was I wasn’t totally sure what was and wasn’t off limits.  Not a great excuse but a valid one.  I know for sure the Pasta and ALL the desserts I had were off limits.  The goal is to do Paleo hard core for 1 month and then scale it back and live a little after the first month.

Here it is. In all it’s unfinished glory (tweaks will be made in the next few weeks but nothing major). Toon-Time.com 3.0. The site has been long overdue for an upgrade and I hope everyone likes it. Of course, a fancy new look is no good if I don’t post anything on a regular basis. When I looked back at how many posts I had in 2008, it was just sad. In 2009, my goal is to post at least 3 times a week. I’m on the computer enough and anyone who knows me will nod their head with the next statement… I always have an opinion and will talk about it even if you don’t want to hear it. Up until this point, Toon-Time has been focused on keeping the extended family up to date on what we were up to since we were in Chicago. Now that we are back on the East Coast, we see everyone more often. The site will probably evolve into more of a place for me to express my opinions. However, there will still be more then enough family updates.

Some things to check out in v3.0:

  • Photos section is updated. The post come directly out of my facebook albums (I am a Facebook junkie). You can also still view the old photos prior to Summer of 2008 by clicking the link in the photos section.
  • Status will be updated from my Facebook Status (again… Facebook junkie).
  • Comments sections will be left on for everyone to add their to cents to my posts and tell me that I am dead wrong.
  • Old posts can be found by clicking on the link at the top of the page called ‘Old Posts’. It’s displayed in a cool format which your either going to love or hate.
  • Picture in the upper right of the page will change every time you visit or refresh the site.

2008 is wrapping up and 2009 is just around the corner.  I hope you’ll continue to visit Toon-Time.com next year.

We took the video camera along on one of our car rides to show everyone what it’s like to ride with a 2 year old in the back seat that is discovering different types of music. Everyday we try to introduce a new song. :-)
